Key Points
- For patients unable to take psychotropic drugs orally:
- In the US and Canada, there are no approved parenteral formulations of antidepressants
- Selegiline is available as transdermal and sublingual formulations (FDA-approved for Parkinson's disease)
- In Europe, IV citalopram and several tricyclics including clomipramine are available
- Some clinicians have reported using mirtazapine orally dissolving tablets sublingually
- There are many non-oral options available for antipsychotics and benzodiazepines
