Highlights
- Synthetic cannabinoids are full agonists at the CB1 receptor, have weak action at the CB2 receptor, have active metabolites as well as longer half-lives compared to THC.
- Suspect synthetic cannabinoid intoxication in the following situations: red eyes, sudden development of unexplained psychosis, cognitive impairment, renal, CNS or cardiovascular problems.
- If you suspect synthetic cannabinoid intoxication, perform a full physical and neurological exam as well as routine labs, urine drug testing, ECG and possibly brain imaging.
