Biography

Sagar V. Parikh, M.D., F.R.C.P.C. is the John F. Greden Professor of Depression and Clinical Neuroscience at Michigan Medicine and a Professor of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Previously, he was a full-time professor at the University of Toronto (1994–2015), where he served as Director of Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Head of the Bipolar Clinic at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), as well as Deputy Psychiatrist-in-Chief at the University Health Network in Toronto.

Dr. Parikh is the Medical Director of the National Network of Depression Centers (USA) and Education Chair of the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT). He is the author or editor of three books and more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He has also been a co-author of all 13 editions of CANMAT treatment guidelines since 1997.

His research focuses on clinical trials of medications and psychotherapy for bipolar disorder and major depression, as well as biomarkers of treatment response, ketamine, and pharmacogenomics. In addition, he is actively involved in developing and evaluating innovative service delivery models, including Group Medical Visits and digital mental health tools. He has also conducted extensive research and developed novel programs in medical education.

Dr. Parikh has received multiple awards for excellence in education and psychiatric research, including the Dave Davis CEPD Research Award (2008), the R.O. Jones Award for Best Research Paper (2011), and the Paula Goering Collaborative Research and Knowledge Translation Award (2018). The Michigan Depression Toolkit, a digital resource he leads, received a Bronze Digital Health Award in 2018.

He was also awarded the 2019 Academic Gold Award for Psychiatric Services Achievement from the American Psychiatric Association (with Dr. John Greden and Ms. Stephanie Salazar) for the Michigan Peer-to-Peer Depression Awareness Program, and the 2020 Mogens Schou Award for Education and Teaching from the International Society for Bipolar Disorders. His teaching excellence has been recognized with three local, three national, and two international awards, including the Paul Patterson Education Innovation Award from the Canadian Psychiatric Association in 2018.
