Biography
Dr. James K. Rustad joined the Dartmouth faculty in 2016 as a psychiatrist in the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service at the White River Junction VA Medical Center and the Burlington Lakeside Community-Based Outpatient Clinic. Dr. Rustad received his B.S. from the University of Florida and his M.D. from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Following a residency in Adult Psychiatry at Jackson Memorial Hospital (affiliated with the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami), he completed a Fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine while serving as a Graduate Assistant and Clinical Fellow in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Rustad is a Fellow of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and serves as Acting Section Chief of Psychiatry at the White River Junction VA Medical Center. In 2024, he received the Dartmouth Psychiatry Excellence in Education Award. His clinical and research interests include psychoneuroendocrinology, catatonia, substance use disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and primary care–mental health integration.
Dr. Rustad also works at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
