Biography

Charles F. Reynolds III, M.D., is the Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry (Emeritus) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPMC); Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the Tufts University School of Medicine; and, serves as Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry (AJGP). Prior to July 2017, he served as the UPMC Endowed Professor in Geriatric Psychiatry, Professor of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences, at the Pitt Graduate School of Public Health; as Director of the Aging Institute of the UPMC and University of Pittsburgh; and at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)-sponsored Center of Excellence in the Prevention and Treatment of Late Life Mood Disorders, the John A. Hartford Center of Excellence in Geriatric Psychiatry, and on the DSM-5 Sleep-Wake Disorders Workgroup. He is currently serving as a member of the Lancet Depression Commission of the World Psychiatric Association.

He graduated magna cum laude in Philosophy and Religious Studies from the University of Virginia before earning his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine in 1973. He then completed a straight medical internship at the Royal Victoria Hospital and Montreal Neurological Hospital and continued on to post-graduate work in adult and geriatric psychiatry and sleep disorders at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC.

Dr. Reynolds is internationally renowned in the field of geriatric psychiatry. His primary research interests focus on mood, grief, and sleep disorders of later life, with a particular focus on mental health services in primary care, improving treatment strategies, depression prevention, and promotion of brain health in older adults.

He was the 2016 recipient of the Pardes Humanitarian Prize in Mental Health awarded by the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation for his groundbreaking contributions to the prevention and treatment of depression in older adults. Also in 2016, Dr. Reynolds was elected to the Association of American Physicians for his pioneering work as a physician-scientist in geriatric psychiatry and the prevention and treatment of late-life depression.

Dr. Reynolds’ bibliography contains more than 798 publications in peer-reviewed journals, has been cited 45,000 times, and had an H-Index of 94 as of January 2019. In addition to his duties as Editor-in-Chief of the AJGP, he serves on the editorial board of JAMA Psychiatry. He has published his work in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, The Lancet, the British Medical Journal, the American Journal of Psychiatry, and the Archives of General Psychiatry. He is a much sought-after mentor to physician-scientists and has mentored approximately 25 NIH K awardees. He is a past recipient of an NIMH Research Scientist Award (K05).
