Now, let’s look at a recent review on the pharmacotherapy of benzodiazepine withdrawal. In other words, are there medications out there that might help people manage when they’re trying to come off of a benzodiazepine? We’ll look at the medications that have been studied for this purpose based on a 2018 review in the journal called Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology . This paper reviewed 37 previous studies or case reports, all the evidence that they could find. Basically, they concluded that too little data were available for meta-analysis. They looked at a remarkable string of medications. I think that’s the strength of this paper—the breadth of the candidates that they reviewed. And overall, unfortunately, none of the medications examined rose to the level of a clear candidate for routine use in treatment of benzodiazepine withdrawal.
