A connection between the gut and the brain? Well, of course, that’s abundantly clear now. How about a connection between gut microbes and mental illnesses? Yes, that’s increasingly clear as well. But are the changes observed specific to particular psychiatric disorders? Are there gut biomarkers that could point toward a particular diagnosis?
Hi! Jim Phelps here for the Psychopharmacology Institute. In this Quick Take, we’ll look at a review of 59 studies of gut microbes and the diagnoses of the people carrying them. The authors were looking for evidence that particular bacteria might be associated with a particular diagnosis, such that a profile of a patient’s gut microbiome could be used in psychiatric diagnosis. Wow! What at an idea and an intriguing research approach as well! Use gut microbe data gathered and studies of specific diagnosis and lump all those data together to see whether there is a pattern across
