Hi! This is David Rosenberg from the Psychopharmacology Institute. In this CAP—or Child and Adolescent Psychiatry—Smart Take, we will examine whether or not autism spectrum disorder (ASD), diagnosed very early in childhood—between 12 and 36 months, or 1 and 3 years of age—persists into early childhood through school age. What these authors did, and it is a truly important study, is that they examined children who were diagnosed clinically with ASD at 12–36 months of age to see whether they continued to meet diagnostic criteria for ASD at 5–7 years of age. They went even further. They also looked at what factors were associated with the persistence of ASD. This is critically important because there is a lot of literature, and, for example, one of the gold standards for autism assessment, the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, also known as the ADOS and the ADOS-2, is felt to be able to
