Why does bipolar disorder increase cardiometabolic risks? So there are a number of reasons for that, lifestyle factors like low levels of physical activity, smoking, iatrogenic effects. So almost all of the BD drugs that we prescribe as clinicians can cause weight gain. And there are a variety of other factors that can increase the cardiometabolic risk in bipolar disorder. It appears likely based on emerging research that bipolar disorder is not just a brain disorder but that it likely is a multisystem condition that affects multiple systems and circuitry in the body that leads to kind of cumulative cardiometabolic risk over time.
