05. Naloxone for Overdose Prevention
Key Points
- Naloxone is very effective in reversing an opioid overdose.
- It can be delivered by a lay person and if the patient is not experiencing an opioid overdose, naloxone is harmless.
- There is a new version much easier to use that contains a higher naloxone dose (4 mg).
- This higher dose is recommended, because it is effective for a fentanyl overdose.
- Use 3 cardinal features to identify an opioid overdose:
- Stupor
- Constricted pupils
- Respiratory depression
- Offer a naloxone prescription to high-risk patients. Those with a prior history of overdose, on opioid pain medications at doses greater than 50 mg morphine equivalent and on both opioids and benzodiazepines.
