If you were an alcohol researcher, it would be a thrill to get results like these. During follow-up, 7% heavy drinking days on the study drug vs 36% heavy drinking days on placebo was found. Wow! From the title of this episode, you already know that the study drug was prazosin. However, you won’t see those results from prazosin in your patients unless you choose them carefully.
Hi! Jim Phelps here for the Psychopharmacology Institute. Previous research had indicated some promise for prazosin in the treatment of alcohol dependence, but the results were mixed. There were clues to explain the differing results. First, laboratory research had shown that withdrawal symptoms were accompanied by changes in medial prefrontal cortex activity that predict alcohol relapse. In primates, prazosin also improves working memory and prefrontal cortical function under “high uncontrollable stress.” We’ll overlook for the moment what kind of lab treatment those primates
