We’ll begin with a look at mixed states, which bridges the divide between unipolar and bipolar, if one uses a more dichotomous labeling system.
First, let’s look at this notion of mixed states. We’ll do so by looking at treatment guidelines for bipolar disorders that included guidelines on the treatment of mixed states. This was prepared by an international team looking at 6 guidelines from around the world. Its senior authors were from the International Society for Bipolar Disorders, so this is a reliable group in terms of presenting these data with an even-handed view. In this 2018 review published in the Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, you’ll find it’s thorough to the point of being exhaustive. It’s really more like an encyclopedia entry that you’d go to rather than reading all the way through a reference source.
