For our next Quick Take, let’s look at some new work on the use of MDMA—that’s the club drug ecstasy—in the treatment of PTSD.
Using MDMA? Well, this is kind of like the old work from back in the 1960s where LSD was used to presumably facilitate psychotherapy, and that whole movement of using these psychedelic drugs fell out of favor. But it’s coming back in part because of the assistance of a group called MAPS—that is the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. That group sponsored this work, which was published in *Lancet Psychiatry* and has a very tight design and stunning outcome data. Let’s take a look.
In brief, this was a study of the treatment of veterans and policemen and firefighters with a confirmed diagnosis of PTSD. Treatment was 18 hours of psychotherapy that was augmented with 2 sessions of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy. The results were as follows.
