So, we’ve just discussed the first principle of psychodynamic psychopharmacology—avoiding a mind-body split. The second is: know who the patient is, as opposed to what the patient is. And to echo a statement that’s been attributed to Sir William Osler, arguably the Father of Modern American Medicine, it is much more important to know what sort of a patient has a disease than to know what sort of a disease a patient has. And similarly, Maimonides and his treatise on asthma made the point that it’s important to treat the patient rather than simply the disease.

And so, I think the second principle is that we need to be mindful that there is a patient with a whole subjectivity and a whole psychology that shapes how treatment is going to work. And there are a whole host of what I would call nonclinical patient variables that affect how medication is going to work. When I say nonclinical, I mean it’s not a characteristic of the specific disease that we’re treating. It’s a characteristic of the person that affects how the treatment is going to work.
