08. From Opium to Heroin
Key Points
- Physicians first tried using heroin as a substitution treatment for individuals addicted to morphine or opium.
- In the 70s and 80s heroin was the most commonly misused opioid. Since the early 90s, prescription opioids became the drugs of choice for the majority of individuals with opioid use disorders.
- Heroin can be parenterally injected intravenously, intramuscularly, or subcutaneously. It can also be taken intranasally or smoked directly.
- Opioid addiction can develop very quickly (sometimes in months).
