Learning to see bias in published research is a bit like learning to look for structural racism. You have to suspect that there’s something beneath the surface, and you have to know to hunt for it. Where did this study come from? Why is this here? Why are we asking this question and not some other question?
Hi! Jim Phelps here for the Psychopharmacology Institute. In this Quick Take, we’ll look at treatments for bipolar depression while examining a new network meta-analysis of antipsychotics and where the study came from.
First, why this study? Well, network meta-analyses are pretty cool, mathematically. Frankly, I’ve not really learned yet how to see the results as materially different than regular meta-analysis. So, this paper is perhaps an opportunity to learn. On the other hand, why is this analysis restricted to antipsychotics? What about lamotrigine and lithium, which are first-line options for bipolar depression
