Lately, psychedelics, like psilocybin and LSD, are getting much attention as potential treatments for mood, anxiety, and addiction. However, how about good old marijuana? It is legal in at least 10 states of the United States and available for medicinal use in another 10. Does it have any value in psychiatry? That is a hard question to ask given that there are significant concerns about marijuana, inducing mental illness. It can induce psychosis and is a strong risk factor for the development of schizophrenia and perhaps bipolar disorder. Let’s see if there is any reason to think that marijuana has a mental health upside as well for some patients.
