How about this for a title? “Bipolar II Disorder Is a Myth.” That’s the title of an essay in the May 2019 issue of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry . This is by a fellow named Gin Malhi and his colleagues in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Malhi is a highly respected member of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders, including serving as editor of their journal. Let me read to you a little bit to give you a sense of where he and his colleagues are going with this. “We propose the abandonment of bipolar I and bipolar II as diagnostic categories.” Dr. Malhi and colleagues are suggesting “an evidence-based and pragmatic dimensional approach to the diagnosis of mania.” So, note the jargon here. “Dimensional” means using a spectrum approach.
