For our next Quick Take, let’s look at augmentation strategies in treatment-resistant depression.
What do you do when your first or second treatment for major depression doesn’t work? In general, I think we’ve evolved to using a strategy of switching to some other treatment if there has been no response at all and augmenting if there’s been some response and the treatment has been well tolerated. So, how good are augmentation treatments? The study we’re looking at here is a 2019 meta-analysis from a British team led by Andrew Young and many colleagues. From several thousand studies that they looked at in their overall literature review, they examined full text for about 300 studies and selected 26 for their meta-analysis. That sounds pretty good!
