03. Antipsychotics for Agitation: Differences Between Tablets, Orally Disintegrating Tablets and Sublingual Formulations

Key Points

  • Orally disintegrating medications:
    • Require a lower level of cooperation
    • Are NOT more rapid than standard oral formulations
    • Aripiprazole (Abilify Discmelt): 10-15 mg q 2 hrs, olanzapine (Zyprexa Zydis) 5-10 mg q 30 min - 2 hrs, risperidone (Risperdal M-tabs) 1-2 mg q 30 min
  • Sublingual asenapine:
    • Not absorbed if swallowed, requires higher level of cooperation
    • Dose range: 5-10 mg BID
