Hi! David Rosenberg here for the Psychopharmacology Institute. In this CAP—or Child and Adolescent Psychiatry—Smart Take, we will look at how a web-based drug information system developed in Germany could prevent prescribing errors and serious adverse drug reactions in children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders. It includes dosing recommendations and pharmaceutical and pharmacologic information for various drugs used in children and adolescents in Germany. So, psychotropic medications are more frequently prescribed off-label in children and adolescents than adults. So, children and adolescents with mental disorders are at increased risk or even unknown risk for serious adverse drug reactions.
Moreover, the authors looked at child and adolescent inpatients and examined the preventability or lack thereof of serious adverse drug reactions by following the recommendations of a web-based pediatric drug information system. They screened over 1,000 patients, about 64% receiving psychotropic medication treatment. In over 8% of these patients, 54 serious adverse
