For our next review, here’s an article on “What Clinicians Should Know About Comorbid Medical Conditions When Caring for Patients with Opioid Use Disorder.” This was published in 2019 by Deepika Slawek of the Department of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and colleagues. The goal here is to summarize the severe and frequently occurring comorbid medical conditions in opioid use disorder. But they went straight to emphasizing that people who use drugs need care that maintains their dignity and reduces shame. This is not “being soft.” It’s to get better outcomes that way. As they point out, stigma may prevent people with opioid use disorders from seeking medical care. Communications that use first-person language, like “people who use drugs”, and avoid stigmatizing slang, like “addict” or “drug seeker”, is an essential component of care.
