Hi! David Rosenberg here for the Psychopharmacology Institute. In this CAP—or Child and Adolescent Psychiatry—Smart Take, we will look at the effectiveness of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions alone or in combination for preschool children through adolescence with ASD, ADHD, disruptive behavior disorders, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, and severe mood dysregulation with persistent irritability.
This article conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, analyzing over 100 studies. As expected, considerable heterogeneity was seen; however, large effects were still seen. This is a huge issue and critical analysis, as persistent irritability is one of the most common reasons for referral to mental health providers. The good news is that large beneficial effects were found for these conditions with pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions. An additional benefit was seen with combined pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions; the combination was superior to either treatment alone. Antipsychotics, perhaps not surprisingly, had the largest beneficial effect in decreasing irritability
