- Use
- FDA: use valproate during pregnancy in women with epilepsy or bipolar disorder only if other drugs are ineffective or unacceptable
- 2016 British Association for Psychopharmacology Guidelines: the risk/benefit for valproate contraindicates its use in women of child-bearing potential
- Monitoring
- Ultrasound at 16-18 weeks
- Consider fetal echocardiography at 16-20 weeks
- Interventions
- Folic acid 4-5 mg/day
- At preconception and during the first 3 months of pregnancy
