This is a Quick Take about adverse drug reactions. We’ll start with a little quiz. Question 1, what is the most common adverse drug reaction (ADR)? Question 2, which class of psychiatric medications causes ADRs most frequently? If you’re like me, you immediately start trying to answer the question. Weight gain is the most common ADR, thought I, and antipsychotics the most common class. But, of course, the right answer is, it depends.

The answer depends on whether you’re looking at inpatient records, outpatient records, or both and on whether you’re recording absolute or relative numbers—the sheer total of adverse reactions reports for a given medication or the number of those reports relative to the frequency with which that medication is prescribed.
