For our next Quick Take, let’s look at a recent article from JAMA Psychiatry on the treatment of delirium, and the lesson here turns out to be more about how to interpret the literature than about the treatment of delirium itself, as you’ll see. This is an important new method of research presentation called a network meta-analysis. And understanding how this is done is crucial to being able to interpret the abstract of the article, which I’m going to read a line for you from that, and you’ll see how things change as we understand the nature of this research tool. “A network meta-analysis demonstrated that haloperidol plus lorazepam provided the best response rate for delirium treatment compared with placebo control, and the odds ratio was 28.”
