01. Depression in Women of Childbearing Age: Its Impact on the Next Generation
Key Points
- Beginning at puberty, compared to men, women are at an increased risk for first-onset depression.
- While pregnancy is not necessarily a time of increased risk for depression, women with histories of depression who stop medication that kept them well proximate to pregnancy are at five times the increased risk of relapsing.
- The postpartum period is a time of vulnerability for mood disorders, and this is particularly true for women with histories of depression, especially if they have been depressed during pregnancy or have been depressed during a prior postpartum period.
- Successful treatment of maternal depression has been shown to have a positive impact for both mothers and their children.
